I have a quad runner 500 k1 and I have a problem with it not keeping my battery charged, I replaced the rectifier and the battery it worked good until the snow hit and I was using the wich for plowing and the winch drained my battery. I need to know if it could be the stator? its the only thing left to replace in the charging system, when I check the voltage at the battery when its running I am pushing around 13 and 14 volts at mid throttle and at sitting idle I get 12.73 volts its charging I belive but when I use the winch it drops to 11 and 10 volts I guess I am confused, can anyone enlighten me on this issue?

The voltages sound right at mid throttle, however at idle it seems a tad low at 12.73 volts, should be more around the 13.0 to 13.3 volts range. Though 0.27 volts difference shouldn't really affect much. And the draw from the winch shouldn't bring the voltage down all that much. So if you're getting draw that brings the voltage down around 11 to 10 volts then i suspect something with the winch. Do you have any issues just running the atv around if you don't use the winch..?

I do it seems to be lagging a bit when driving and its a brand new warn 3000lb winch with solenoid but after doing some more probing and a series of shutting it off the voltage varies at idle and when I touch the throttle it jumps up from 12.73 to 13.25 volts and stays there. there are times were it runs awesome then times it runs like crap and when it does the voltage is around 11.35 to 10.27 but when I rev the crap out of it the voltage goes to 13.25 to 14 volts I am thinking the stator is cracked or something is wrong with it, I always had this problem but after replacing the rectifier it has gotten a bit better but I still have the problem with it draining the battery when im am driving it because if I shut it off from riding it doesn't want to turn over or the battery is so weak it wont fire the engine so I have to use the recoil starter to make it fire, this is why I am confused. I don't want to waste the money if its something else. oh and sometimes I have a weak spark too, I have to take the plug out and dip it in gas to ignite the chamber to run the atv.

Weak spark could be the result of a faulty or failing CDI. However, the CDI is a pricey component so making sure it's the culprit is a must. And from research I've done it appears the stator you are talking about is known as a generator according to different manuals that I've looked through. There are tests to determine what proper voltage it should be putting out, however i don't know the exact specs for your model atv.

Mine works fine plowing, unless I'm using the lights as well.

I just installed a 7" LED lightbar and no more power issues.

Granted mine was missing the stock headlights to begin with and the THULE lights I installed were drawing more than the machine could handle.

I added a rear LED as well. So much nicer when plowing in the dark. With only six hours of sunlight a day I need lights...lots of them.

thanks for the responses but now all I have is 12.73 even when revving up I do suspect the stator is the problem its getting weak its all fine until I use the winch or use the light especially the winch, I assume its the stator but this is all I have left to replace in the charging system but I will take the atv to the dealer to test it too see and I will let you guys know!

I am having a very similar problem with my 2001 LT-f300F. Replaced the bad regulator/rectifier and the bad battery and everything was better for a while. Then it wouldn't start. Charged the battery some more and then noticed that the tail light was inop and later the headlight was also inop. The bike then wouldn't start once the weather got cold. I am getting ready to run some tests on the generator. Is it likely that if the generator is bad that it may have again destroyed the regulator/rectifier? Is the generator difficult to replace? I hope that I didn't install a defective aftermarket regulator/rectifier. The last one that I replaced had a fried connector and didn't test out correctly. Anyone have any other components that might be suspect with these symptoms? Thanks guys.

It sounds like a fuse is blown or something if your lights aren't working. I would check the stator to see if it is good. It is located under the flywheel and you should be able to test it with an ohm meter. I don't know which wires are which on this machine so hopefully someone will post a testing procedure and some resistance specs for the stator.

@dvdclarksn. Here, download this: '99 to '04 Suzuki King Quad 300 Service Manual (PDF). (Removed Link Per Forum Rules) It should help you in troubleshooting your issue.
