I have an 04' Suzuki Vinson auto with 5500miles Last weekend it started making a whining noise from the clutch cover side. It steady got worse all day and as I was heading home the belt started to physically smoke and broke, Had to get pulled home from there. I thought that the whining sound was just the belt giving up.
I went and put a new belt on last night and it still whines just as bad! also have no where near the top speed or accel it had. Now, I was able to put the belt on without removing the movable drive faces. I watched a youtube video of a guy with arctic cat who just slid the belt on and spun the faces and after some force it just popped on and seemed tight to me. The clutch cover was covered in belt "hair" and quite dirty, but the movable drive faces were (looked) clean, also the bearing on the clutch case felt fine and was clean.
The whining start as soon as the machine is revved high enough to start moving and quits as soon as it slows down enough to stop. The whine is loud enough guys riding in front of me on the trail can hear it too.
Any ideas what it could be? should i just clean and reinstall the belt? Anything that can wear in these areas i should look for? rollers in the movable face etc?
I just ordered the tool to hold the faces in place (rotor holder tool) so I can take off both faces and do it right next time. Attached is a pic of the broken belt after i took it off and before popping the new one on.
Any tips are appreciated, hopefully vinny (and I think Arctic cat has the same belt) owners in the future can read this before they do a belt.
