Hi gang!! Here's on for you. I'm looking to get a plow/hunting rig. Nothing fancy. If it starts.. cool. I found a 1994 KQ on marketplace for $500. Description say "runs drives, but either the rear end or the rear breaks are locked up. My question, which is the likely culprit? I dont mind working on stuff.. I'd rather not spend $500, toss another $300 into it AND it might work. Ideas?

Thanks

There’s only one rear mechanical brake on the rear righthand side. Only true way to tell would be to pull the rear drum off, put the tire back on and see if it moves. Or pull the drum off, jack up the atv, and then see if the rear tires will spin. If it doesn’t then it’s mostly likely something seized within the crankcase. Which could be anything really.

Pulling the brakes or just removing the rear drum should help determine if it’s simply the rear brakes or if it’s in the in the rear end. Had the right front brake seize on my 300. Only way it would move is if I pulled the front drum off. The minute I put the drum back on it wouldn’t budge. That’s how I figured out it was my front brakes causing the issue. Turns out one of my wheel cylinder ingested water, froze over the winter, then seized in the fully applied position.

Never replaced one, so couldn’t really tell you. Though depending on what might be broken is another story. Then you’d need to figure out if there’s any part availability and how much it would end up costing you in the end.
