Hey guys, so I have a 1999-2000 year quadrunner 500. I was idling in my garage and after about 30 seconds noticed smoke coming out from under the plastics around the bottom of the seat on the rear brake lever side. Chased it down to the voltage regulator which the plastic backing on the aluminum housing melted off of and the internals are burning up. Quad runs though. Purchased a new one and installed, also before putting the battery to it to test I carefully spent a few hours inspecting as much of the wiring on the quad as I could looking for shorts or problem areas in which I found nothing. Started right up and runs good. Less than 30 seconds in the new voltage regulator burns up the exact same way. Shut it down. The internals are burning up s well as the harness to plug it in melted and wouldn't come apart. Anyone experienced anything like this? Wasn't I'm water previous to this for months and is stored in a garage. Seems like it's shorting out. Could a bad stator cause this? If so are they hard for a home mechanic to change? Thanks for reading!

Sounds like you have a short somewhere. I would start by looking at all your wiring. Chances are you will see, feel, or smell something that will capture your attention. Look for melted , discolored, or insulation bear wiring and trace it.

hi
i would start by checking the stator .
if it is putting out to much, it can burn up the reg.
you said it melted the harness, which side? if it is the side with 3 wires coming from the stator, you should have your answere.
