I just went through the process of deciding if I wanted Super Lights or Mud Lites on the front of my ATV and figured I'd post here while the info is still fresh on my mind.
The quad came with Super Lights on the front 12 years ago when I bought it and I honestly didn't think they were that worn. That's some pretty good longevity if we consider how long the previous owner may have had them.
The only problem with them was I drilled dozens of holes and had them studded with bolts then I got tired of leaky tires. Since I had already put Mud Lites on the back a few years ago I had to decide whether I wanted to stay consistent with more Mud Lites or replace the Super Lights, which look so similar no one would really know without looking close.
There are only a few subtle differences in the tread pattern, but the biggest difference overall is the Super Lights have a rim guard that covers the edge of the rim. To me that was a big selling point because, I don't know, it just looks kinda cool.
The difference in tread is small, but can be noticed side by side. The Mud Lites have wider paddles with a wider cutout in the middle. That wider paddle comes at the cost of less space between paddles, but offers the benefit of giving loose dirt a place to go so the rubber can find something hard to bite into. Alternatively, the Super Lights have narrower paddles which offers more space between paddles, but the cutout would clog so fast it's bordering on useless. However the narrower paddle would bite in deeper in leaves and compost on a forest floor. So we lose some of this and gain some of that.
The centerline of the tires have some small differences as well. The Super Lights have longer points on the leading edge of the center lug which helps the tread make a more continuous contact with the ground providing a potentially smoother ride and less noise on pavement. On the Mud Lites the point is lopped off, sacrificing the smoother ride for a little more clawing ability.
So the choice isn't very easy. The differences are so small that it almost makes no difference, but the Super Lights have the rim guard, so that's the way I went.
But if I had to call it one way or the other I'd give Mud Lites the edge on hard dirt while Super Lights should be slightly better on something loose like mud or leaves.
