I bought this quad as a leftover appx 4 years ago and have had multiple problems with it. first it stopped charging. I replaced battery, reg/rectifier to no avail, when I took it down I found that the washer that was supposed to be on the high/low range shaft in the left side engine cover wasn't there, it was inside my stator, rotor and had ripped it to shreds. I couldn't prove that the cover had never been removed so I had to pay for that. then the speedometer odometer stopped working, no big deal I don't need it so I never bothered with it. then I started to notice an oil slick when parked in the river and I smelled gas, now the efi light comes on every time I spin the tires or accelerate fast. I had a clicking sound in the rear and noticed a torn boot on the left rear driveshaft. I replaced the driveshaft with a new one and the clicking went away. now I am having steering issues...the handlebars lock often, usually when trying to turn right and if I turn left quickly it unlocks for awhile, I've had the front end up and there is no binding anywhere but when I ride it still happens, I have lubricated everything that moves that is involved with steering but no change. lately it does not want to come out of 4 wheel drive regardless of how far I back up or drive or shut the engine off and on again. this is my first quad, I've had many motorcycles and atc's. I think I may need a front drive shaft I do hear clicking on the left front, could a bad(whatever they call that weird ball bearing doughnut looking thing on the driveshaft) cause the steering lock? it feels like worn steering head bearings except this quad has no steering bearings. are all quads this much of a hassle or should I buy another quad and just light this one on fire? ps. I don't beat on the quad, I primarily use it to walk my dog in the woods.

Wow, you’ve got more than your fair share of trouble with this one.

On going problems one at a time:

1) Head unit not displaying speed and odometer. If you search this site, there has been a recent discussion on that problem, although the repair seemed way deep in computer land.

2) Leaking oil/gas. Sound like an oil leak. I suggest pulling the side plastic and center side plate off and identifying the source and repairing as needed. There was a time Suzuki an issue with fuel tank vents plugging and causing a leak, you might make sure the futank vent works. It’s on top of the fuel tank, under the rear plastic and clipped to the top frame rail IIRC.

3) EFI light on with aggressive throttle. My guess is there’s an error code that might tell you what’s going on with that. Might be the fuel supply isn’t keeping up with the demand at those times , although it certainly should.

4) Handlebars lock often, usually when trying to turn right and if I turn left quickly it unlocks for awhile. This occurs despite lubing all steering components and checking for binding. It would this would be related to the steering links and rod ends that are attached to the steering shaft, or the opposing ends with binding occurring under load. I’d check the rod ends really well and simulate loading when you check the steering function.

5) Not coming out of 4WD. I suspect this due to the push button electric switch near the right handle bar switch not working correctly. The contacts inside the switch get a little work and default to “on most of the time” even it the push button switch is in the out position. The Grizzly’s have this problem. There’s an electrical genius that has a web site called 501 Part Tech. Here’s a link to how to fix the problem on a Grizzly. I suspect the KQ is similar.

Good luck with it. Your bike has had way more than it’s fair share of problems. You might fix all this and trade it in. That or your dog walking is rather extreme compared to some.

yeah this quad has me wringing my hands. thanks for the ideas I'm sure I will get to the root of the steering issue. I'm new to quads but have been two wheeling for 53 years. 2 wheelers don't have all this steering apparatus. just a another new learning curve. I've recently gotten into electric mc's and they're very confusing to work on. old dogs and new tricks.
