Pretty confident I have a gas leak in my 2001 300 ltf. So my son fill the tank and I got to notice and it was only about a half a tank of gas in there. Just noticed on the ground now that there is gas on the ground and a little bit of a trail from where it was pulled through the grass and it must have been dripping there also, While it was running. I just checked the gas it's on empty I just checked the oil and it it's full but I can't tell it's got gas in it. I've smelled it and it smells a little bit like it has some gas in it. I did change the fuel petcock back and early October of last year and the petcock is hard to turn from fuel to reserve. Almost need a pair of pliers to do it. Anyway it had been filled up with the petcock still on reserve so I'm wondering if there is a hose from The reserve side or something wrong with the petcock on the reserve that would cause it to leak. Any help would be appreciated. Just noticed it a few minutes ago. I will probably change the oil no matter what because it's just not worth the chance even though I changed it in October also. It has a slight odor of gas in the oil I believe but I'm not sure.

The fuel petcock in the On/Res position require vacuum to draw out fuel. There is no separate fuel line from on to reserve. The only difference between on vs reserve is simply the length of the pick up tubes inside the fuel tank. Reserve basically has a shorter pick up tube and therefore draws fuel from the very bottom of the tank.

A stuck float in your carb could also cause fuel to seep into your oil contaminating it. Besides that your fuel petcock diaphragm would have had to literally failed once again to contaminate your oil, or you accidentally left the fuel petcock in the Pri (Prime) position with the engine not running.

As for your leak, if it’s actually coming from the fuel petcock check the screws as Foot0069 suggested. There should also be a gasket in between the tank/fuel petcock. If this gasket is pinched, cracked, or somehow magically dried out already then that could also be a possible source of your leak.

I checked the 2bscrews that hold the petcock in and they were tight. There was not gas in the air box so I'm thinking I must disassemble the petcock and check for a torn diaphragm.

So I suppose the third image of the broken washer is probably what caused the gas leak into the oil. I don't know what went wrong but apparently it broke. Everything was fine until we switched from fuel to reserve. That's must have been when it must have happened. I think the tight valve must have been a clue that I had done something wrong. I'm not sure what it is still but I suppose I put the washer in wrong and tighten down with it not in place. It's only thing I can come up with. If anyone has any knowledge about this washer it would be helpful. I hope I don't have to buy a whole new kit just to get this washer. Or if this washer even comes in the kit?

Apparently pulled up pretty rookie move. I placed the washer not on the outside of the valve between the plate and the valve but rather inside the valve which caused my problem. That is not where it goes I see that now I'm not sure why I didn't see it when I replaced this. Anyway I can use the old washer and have it up and going if anybody has any recommendations of how to get all the gas out of the inside of the motor that would be great. I will probably have to change oil two or three times to get it right.

It's like water, it always takes the path of least resistance, that fat washer seals the diaphragm to the bore in the housing. The crack allowed a void for air to enter, the weight of the fuel pushed the gas through? Hunh?
So do you have an exploded view of the way that goes in. I just want to make sure I don't do it a second time. It worked fine until he put it in reserve.
