Went to my local shop this morning to get front gear oil and not sure they gave me the right stuff. Guy seemed a little confused and told me I needed 1.5 quarts but from what I read it only needs about 2/3 quart? I also asked about a synthetic rope winch line and he told me the steel cable is better and less chance of injury? Anyway, just want to be sure I got the right stuff here. Manual says hypoid but I don't see that anywhere on the bottle?

What information is on the back of the bottle..? And a steel cable is safer than a synthetic rope, really. Steel cables are deadly when they break under load. Not sure this guy has his facts straight.

Tensile strength, maybe. But safer if they break, I don’t believe that. I’d rather be hit by a lightweight synthetic rope than a heavier steel cable. Either one would hurt, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Here, I found this information online:

“There are pros and cons to both steel winch cable and synthetic winch rope, and which one is best for you depends on your specific needs and preferences. Steel winch cable is generally more durable and has a higher breaking strength than synthetic winch rope, making it a good choice for heavy-duty applications where the winch is frequently used or where the load is very heavy. However, steel cable can also rust, kink, and fray, which can lead to dangerous situations if the cable breaks or becomes damaged during use.

On the other hand, synthetic winch rope is lighter, easier to handle, and less likely to cause injury if it snaps under tension. Synthetic rope is also more flexible and easier to store, which can be an advantage if you have limited space. However, synthetic rope is not as strong as steel cable and can wear out faster if it is subjected to harsh conditions or if it is frequently used. Ultimately, both steel winch cable and synthetic winch rope have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between the two will depend on your specific needs and circumstances. If you are unsure which option is best for you, it is recommended to consult with a professional or an experienced winch user.”

Thanks. Mine currently has a steel cable but there is a knot in it about 15' back from the hook so I can't extend it very far before it hits the fairlead. I either need to replace it or cut it off behind the knot. Even if I get the knot out it will still be kinked. No sure how long it is but cutting 15' off shouldn't be a problem but not sure it's worth it when I can buy a synthetic one for $50. Don't plan on using it much. I do use it for the plow and no plans of mudding or any aggressive trail riding so odds of needing it will be slim

If you’re not planning on using your winch all that much such as myself, I’d simply replace it with synthetic rope. For your type of application and the amount of times you’ll actually use it, synthetic rope is perfectly fine. I’ll be doing the same if I ever need to replace mine. Though for the amount of times I actually use my winch I may never even have to, lol.

synthetic rope tends to break way easier and requires a lot of maintenance (washing) to prevent it from breaking. And when you really need your winch it sucks to have the synthetic rope break. I have never had a cable snap and there generally is not that much force on a ATV winch cable anyways. I prefer steel cable.

Or you can buy one of these:

I have something similar to this on my 300. They don’t appear overly complicated to install and saves you having to steal your dog’s Kong. Unless he doesn’t mind sharing, 😂.
