2006 Kingquad 700, blew 30 amp fuse

433 Views 13 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  John1960
Coming up my driveway it just shut down for a split second and then picked back up, then died. It stared but stalled when i put it in gear, started again and died when i put it in gear, then nothing, no lights or anything, started looking and found the 30 amp fuse was blown. When i went to put another fuse in, it gave off a little spark
Any idea where to start looking for the problem
Thanks
Andrew

Maybe a wire has rubbed through somewhere. Something has shorted. I'd start looking for that. A dvm would be helpful as well.

Thanks for the reply
I read that someone had the ignition switch wires under the dash some how fused together, i will check that out.
Is it normal to have a little spark from the battery when hooking up the negative, i took it off and put a new fuse in, and went to put the wire back on and got some small sparks
Something is wrong I'd think. It should only spark if there's a drain somewhere, I can't think of anything that should be pulling power. Like say an adapter to provide USB charging with something hooked to it. It may be indicative of a short. Seems to me I read somewhere that wires chafe near the front of the tank.

I will look into it more tomorrow, it does have grip heaters on it, going to have to take the dash/headlight off and look around

Popping a 30 amp fuse is probably a dead short to ground. I agree with a wire having the insulation wore through. Or maybe an added wiring draw, such as a winch doing something it shouldn’t. Or that heated hand grips you mention. I’d like to think those have their own fuse when they were added. Pull that fuse first. If there is none, disconnect them and try the 30 amp fuse again. And then add a fuse to the hand grip heating wiring.

To avoid a spark hooking up the battery, hook up the positive first, then the negative. But a little spark just means there is a draw of some sort, like the pod keeping time or some such thing. You can find the draw by putting a light bulb between either terminal and the cable. Then pull fuses until the light goes off. That’s the system that’s causing the draw. Now this won’t help much with the main 30 amp fuse popping, but after you resolve that, if you want to know which wiring harness/system is your parasitic draw, this will do it.

I haven't had time the last few days to look into it more, i did pull the dash off and didn't see any bad wires or anything. I wonder if i pull the hot from the starter and try touching the neg cable to battery to see if it still sparks, maybe that would eliminate it, and maybe do the same with the starter relay/solenoid
I think there might have been a recall on the key switch for that year. Look it up.

I really haven't had the time to look further, i have two other 4 wheelers so not in a real hurry, it does have hand warmers and a winch which i have to look into

Thanks, i look into it
I monkey'd around with it today, i unhooked the winch system which i heard it could be the problem, but it still sparks a little when touching the neg, i went ahead and just hooked it up anyway, turned the key on and dash lit up, hit the starter and it started but blew the fuse after 3-4 secs of running
Remove the winch wiring from the power supply to eliminate one problem at a time.

yep, did that, strange that it will start but die after a 3-4 seconds [blew the 30 amp fuse], i still don't like that it has a little spark when hooking up neg cable

It is possible to have a small amount of draw , as mentioned by Toy Ford. I would also disconnect your grip heaters to remove them from the equation. If you have a meter, put that in the line to define how much draw you have. Then we can give the “little spark” a definition.

As mentioned, it sounds like a direct short to ground if you are blowing a 30 amp fuse. That is a fair amount of power. Look for a wire with the insulation rubbed off. It’s often difficult to find.

Good Luck.
