Ok so I have a 02 Suzuki LT-A400 that's being a super pain, I can only get it to idle, if you touch the throttle at all it does. Originally tore down to replace the stator due to a charging problem, since then I have changed a lot of parts trying to avoid the CDI box, but ultimately did replace it. Here's the list of parts I changed: vacuum fuel shutoff, Stator, rectifier/regulator, coil pack with plug wire, spark plug, and CDI.

I finally got spark again after the CDI was replaced, so on to fuel, I knew the carb would need cleaned but I found an after market carb for 40 bucks and I thought why not. Ordered, installed, and hit the key the wheeler idles the nicest it's probably ever idled, but if you touch the throttle it dies. Can't for the life of me figure out why, so I cleaned the OEM carb. It does the same thing. So I started checking for vacuum leaks with either, nothing is leaking vacuum. The other oddity is if I spray either into the carb while it runs there is not change in how it runs.

I'm beginning to think the CDI box is faulty. It was the only thing I bought used to try and save money. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Chris

I have the same story. I am pretty sure that the stumble after trying to throttle up is creating a rich condition. Mine starts and idles fine, but when you give it even the slightest throttle, it starts to stumble. If I cup the carb to choke it a little, it is worse. If I let it return to idle, it recovers to a normal idle.
I professionally cleaned the factory carb, then I replaced the carb with a simpler model, but the symptoms remain. I am really hoping someone has been there, done that and can help us out.

If its dying that sounds like a lean condition. These models are know to be lean from the factory. Is your spark plug giving you any indicators of a lean or rich condition? I hate how the needle jet on these stock carbs are not adjustable. How does it run if you leave the choke on? Have valves been adjusted? Compression check? Backfiring at all?
I figured out my problem. It was a lean condition. I thought it was too rich based on a few symptoms but out of desperation, I tried moving the needle up to the next to bottom notch and sure enough that solved the idle only, not taking throttle issue.

if I choke it it dies, I've never adjusted the valves I've just assumed since it's a pig to use the pull rope I assumed the compression was good. But I do have the ability to check that. I think I'm gonna try to send the OEM carb out to be cleaned and a kit put in it.
