I have a 2001 King Quad 500, When going from high to neutral or neutral to reverse I have to hit the shifter, I mean hard enough it hurts my hand to get it to change gears. Any ideas on what I need to do to make it shift easier as my wife can not get it to change for her at all.

Did you try adjusting the shift linkage..? May simply need to be adjusted. And welcome to the Forum.

could also be an idle issue? idling too high will do that I've seen.
