Oil and gear lube

I have my 97 quadrunner running after a carb clean out. I just picked it up today and was, I think, a real good deal. The question that I have is what are people using for oil and differential lube. I am going to use this for ice fishing this year so it will be cold a lot.

Oil.... Rotella 5W40 T6 full synthetic.... I run it plowing at -40

gear lube... I believe 90w is recommended but I run 75w140 full synthetic in the front diff of my King Quad... see comment about plowing at -40

in the rear diff of my quad I run tractor hydraulic fluid (TDH)... but that's unique to the King Quad cause its got the rear brake located in the rear diff... otherwise..in my two Vinsons I use the 75w140 full synthetic.

I change them regularly.... every 5 years... (I don't take my quads in the water so they never get flooded) and that represents about 5000 km (3000 miles) for the KQ and about 2000 for the Vinnys..nothing for a synthetic fluid

In my 2000 Suzuki King Quad (300). I use Suzuki brand motorcycle oil, (10W40). However, I would use a thinner viscosity oil like 5W30 during the winter months. Suzuki however does not make a SAE 5W30 viscosity, so youíll have to find an alternative brand with a similar viscosity that is JASO-MA approved for motorcycles. I donít use mine during the winter, so I donít have a need to change the oil.

As for the front diff, use a hypoid gear oil, (SAE 80/90).

I did do a search of oil on the forum and found some more suggestions. This is my first quad so I am sure I will have many more questions. I did get a Clymers manual for it already. I always get manuals for vehicles because my PC is in the house and they are outside. Thanks for the information.

Rotella T6 5W40 synthetic is JASO MA in case you consider it....

If you ride in serious cold the synthetics lubes are a huge help... where are you and how cold does it get... here in NW Ontario (Canukistan) the bottom end is -45c or so once or twice a winter (not recently due to global warming I think) but -40c for a a few days is still the norm and -30's for a week or more at a time

I found Quicksilver has an ATV/UTV oil available and they have it in 5W40. Has anyone used this one? I run the lower end oil in my boat and it seems to do just fine.

This is their website. Wallyworld has it as an online order to store for $7.36/qt.
