Help with model & year

Just purchased a used Suzuki Quadsport. I purchased it from a guy, and he claims it's a 2006 LTZ 400 Quadsport. I don't believe he was correct, and knew what he had. It is a 400, and it's a Quadsport, but other than that, i do not know year or any other specifics. When i tried to pull a VIN off it, I can only find the "VIN" on the engine block. I cannot find it on the frame, and i have looked everywhere in sight. The frame has a plate, welded to the frame, just below and in front of the clutch, but the plate is completely blank, with nothing on it. I have visited my local parts dealer, because I am in need of parts, more specific, the rear swing arm section, with the chain adjuster. Mine has the two, small adjusters on it, which I believe to mean it's an earlier version, from 03 or 04 time frame. My question to anyone willing to help, is, am I looking in the right place for the VIN? And if so, why would my frame have the VIN plate, but be completely blank? I've had the ATV for about 2 weeks now, love the thing, but i wish i knew more about it. I've given all it all fresh fluids, and basic all around tune up, but when it comes to buying model and year specific parts, i would like to know exactly what i have. Thanks for reading, sorry it's lenghty, i just wanted everyone to have the whole background.

The Vin# should be located on the left rear downtube like the one in this photo:

Click the image to open in full size.

It should be a 17 digit Vin# with numbers and letters engraved within a small welded plate. Usually starting in something like JSAAK or whatnot. And welcome to the forum.

Do you have that plate in the following pic..? If so write down the number and post it up, I'll decode it for you. Otherwise you can try and figure it out with a little help from this: ( Understanding your vin number ) Let me know if you need anymore assistance.

ajl719- I do not have that downpipe with a metal plate welded to it. I do however, have one right below the clutch side on the frame. The metal plate is completely blank...any idea why?

Here is a picture of the left side of frame, near the clutch. As i mentioned, it is blank. I have pulled the numbers of the engine, but this does not help because they were the same engine on a number of different years. (2003, and up to atleast 2006, according to my suzuki dealer). Any ideas as to why it would be blank?

I see that, hummmm...that's really quite strange. From your picture though it looks like it should be engraved right on that blank plate.

Only thing i can think of is that you have a different frame then the original, maybe somehow the Vin# got overlooked. Thus maybe the reason for the blank Vin# tag.

Yes, it has me stumped. I think I'd actually feel better if I saw grinding marks, or if it looked like it was repainted or something. But the fact that the VIN plate is completely blank really erks me for some reason. Thanks for the help, and I'm sure I'll have more questions about my "phantom machine" somewhere along the line haha.

Yes it is quite odd indeed. I don't blame you for feeling erk about it, just doesn't really make any sense. And we'll be here for any further questions you may have regarding your "Phantom Machine".
