1997 Quadrunner clutch problem
New to the forum - wondering if someone can help. Just got this 97 quadrunner. Just rebuilt the carb and runs good now. Ran it for a couple of days where it ran fine and automatic shifting and clutch seemed to work fine. The next day it would not engage the clutch very well - slipping horribly. Backed it out of the garage and it would hardly move. Seems odd that things were great one day and that bad the next. I've been reading the manual and presume there are some clutch discs that need to be replaced. Will they go out that fast? Does the centrifugal part of the clutch ever go out? Other than the cable to the shifter, is there any other adjustment that can be made?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

To adjust the clutch on the same side as the oil filter just above and to the left, there is a, I believe a 17MM bolt that you need to remove there is a lock nut and set screw in there, the lock nut should be 12mm. Put it in 1st gear and break the nut loose then loosen the set screw out a few turns and then slowly tighten the set screw until you feel it just bump the plate inside, once you have done that tighten the lock nut back down and try it for a ride.
Hopefully that helps the problem out.

I was able to adjust the clutch according to your instructions and that worked great. I want to tweak it just a little. After it warmed up it was still wanting to slip a bit. To engage the clutch a little better/quicker, would I turn the adjustment screw clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Thanks again for the help.

If I remember correctly you should turn it clockwise just a tad but DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN it because it needs a little give to have a spring action to it. I'm glad to help you get it going better than it was. If the above doesn't help it or makes the slipping worse you may need to reaplce the clutches to restore full performance.

Thomas,
It looks like it needed to go counter clockwise. I still have a little slipping so it may be time for clutches. The atv only has 1900 miles on it so I did not expect a clutch replacement. Another oddity I found while doing these adjustments was that my oil fill level seemed to be off. I changed the oil and filter and put in the recommended 3.8 qts, but I probably had to remove at least .5 qts to get the level correct - and that was after it being warmed up then sitting for 5/10 minutes.
So, as a 'heads up' I have done rebuilds of car, golf cart, and even an old mgb transmission before. Is changing out the clutch discs on this thing an intensive job?
Thanks again for the help.

The easiest way i found for filling oil on my atv was to fill it until it's in between the lines on the sight glass. Then start the atv and let it run about 3-5 minutes to let the oil circulate though the filter. After that add the remaining amount of oil needed to get the level in between the lines on the sight glass again and your done. I never go by the recommended amounts in manual or from a dealership. Even though i know mine takes roughly 3.5 qts to 3.8 qts of oil. Also make sure your atv is on as level ground as possible when checking or doing your oil changes.

Yeah I forgot to put counter in front of it, sorry I was having bad day because they canceled a ride I had planned for a month on going to. It really isn't that bad of a job you just have to pay close attention to where everything goes and how it fits together but actually replacing the clutch discs are not very hard at all, just be sure to alternate them.
