Differential Mod
Hey all. There was a site that i was reading a couple days ago. It was from a guy that owned a 99 king Quad who removed the stoper pin for the differential lock. In his post he stated after removing the stopper pin you could then use differential lock in any gear. That being high, low, supper low range. Normaly you have to be in supper low to engage differential lock.
I was thinking of doing this mod to my 2000 King Quad but i am uncertain if this would cause more damage to my quad or not. Is there anybody else out there who has done this and had no problems..? Would this be an ok mod to do..? Would appreciate any insight.

Well, my thinking on this is why would you need the diff lock on in the higher ranges? I would think the cons would outweigh the pros... you know, like ruining your quad.. But that is just me. I don't have any difiniative experiance that would support my thinking, but it just doesn't seem like you would need the diff lock to be on unless you were really stuck in high and low.
I have a '89 LT4WD (250) and have gotten stuck in high, low, and super low, but when I then put it in super Low with diff lock I crawled right out. Then I put it back up in High and took off... Just my opinion, but opinions are like XXXholes, everyone has one and they usually stink....

Wouldn't mind doing this to my 1991 ltf250 4x4. I would like the diff lock in low. I have a clymer manual, just cant figure out which pin needs to be removed. any help.

I totally agree with you Gasoo. Diff lock in low gear would be an added bonus for sure. As for making this modification to your quad, it all depends if the layout for your gear selections are the same as the one i read online. I'll post the link and you can take a look for yourself. There are a few photos and the mod is pretty well explained. Note: this mod is done to a 99 King Quad 300 4x4 so this may vary for your 91 ltf250 4x4.

When reading this mod you will see that the guy is trying to remove the stopper pin which is part# 16 in the gear schematic at the top of the page. If you do make this mod to your quad please let me know how it goes and how your quad runs after the mod. That being performance with diff lock in low or any problems that may occur once this mod is complete. Hope this helps. Good luck..!!

I am thinking about doing this mod too when I have time. Low range diff lock would be nice instead of needing super low. having all 4 locked would be nice for snow or really loose surfaces.. Running diff lock on hard surfaces or at high speed is going to put a lot of stress on some drive train parts which is prob the main reason its locked out... second is probably a liability issue of difficult to steer at higher speed.

Update, I just did this mod, pretty easy to do, took maybe 20-30 minutes. I agree also that it is easier to shift both the 4x4 and range selector levers after this mod. another advantage is that you will get equal braking with the front wheels in snow or other slippery conditions.

Thanks for the feedback Soutthpaw. Nice to know that there are some advantages to doing this mod after all. After reading what you posted, i am eager to try it on mine. I have read alot of comments about it being easier to shift from 2wd, 4wd, diff lock. That also being said for the high, low, super low range as well. From what you also describe, braking seems much better too which is a added bonus. Once again, I much appreciate the feedback. Let me know if there are any problems.

just to clarify, the added braking benefit only comes when the front diff lock is engaged. you will also benefit from better engine braking on decents with diff lock engaged

hummm, dif lock in high meens alot of parts are moving very fast, maybe thats the reason they have it locked in super low only, to save the transmission/gear box from over winding.
