Engine dies when at idle and turn on lights

Hi all,
I have a 2006 KQ 700.
I bought it last week and I love it,
One problem though,
When the engine is at idle if I turn on the lights or go to put it into 4 wheel drive the engine dies, in fact if I use anything electrical at idle the engine dies.
Can anybody help?
Also where would I get a manual for my KQ 700?
Are there any items I should change or check NOW before I start using it ( air filter adjustments, ECM)?
Thanks in advance.

Is the battery starting it or is it dead?

Hi Cummins Driver,
Yes the battery is starting it, the battery is actually new, it was newly installed the day I bought the ATV.
Thanks.

You'll probably want to start checking for a short somewhere. I wish I could be more specific than that but I'd just check all the wires that are visible and go from there.

Yeah that's an interesting problem. Was it doing this before you installed the new battery?

Search online for a manual. I prefer to shop from bikebandit.com but try the forum sponsors first. Clymer writes the best in my opinion.

Have you checked the voltage at the battery? while it is running, it is possible that the stator is bad and even though the battery is starting it when you do something electrical it is pulling too many amps and makes it die. All you have to do is use a volt meter and put positive lead on positive post and negative lead on negative post and see what it is reading at idle, then rev it up a little and see what it reads and post back.

Hi All,
Thank you for the replies,
I will put a volt meter on the battery tomorrow and check while the motor is running.
I don't know if it was doing it before the new battery as it was put into it the day I bought it.
I'll also check for shorts.
By the way what is a STATOR and where is it?
Thanks again.

I ask because I wonder if your new battery was hooked up wrong.

Be sure to check engine off voltage first. Should be around 12VDC on a properly charged battery. Once the engine is on if its 13 or 14VDC it means the battery is receiving a charge. If no change then there is a charging system problem.

The stator (stationary) is the copper coil assembly inside your crank case. A rotor (rotational) is a magnetized steel drum that rotates around the stator to generate electricity. Sometimes this system is called a magneto. Doubtful this stuff is bad on your young rig and you don't want it to be. Spendy stuff and you have to crack the case to get at them.

Have you checked the lights and 4wd with the ignition on, but the engine not running?

It sounds like if it is a short, you'll probably notice melted wire insulation or a melted plug.

It would also be good to check any electrical plugs. For instance, where the headlight bulb plugs into the wiring. The quad could of seen some deep water it didn't like.

Hi All,
I did a voltage check this morning after your advice, here are the results:
No ignition on 12.72 volts.
Ignition on 12.51 volts.
Engine running slightly reved 14.30 volts steady.
with the engine at idle I put on all the lights and there was no problem (for a change)
but when I pressed the 4wd button the engine died (as usual).
If I rev the engine slightly everything works fine.
Thank you all for your help and a Very Happy 4th of July to you all from your friend in Ireland.
