kingquad285 rev issues

I have a kingquad 285 . runs great, until the other day it acted as though it was flooding and would not rev…idled fine. If I turn headlights on it would run fine again.. Days later run like a top, then did it again. Same thing with headlights on, ran fine. Didn’t fool with it for couple of weeks and cranked it again, now it immediately starts smoking from under gas tank. also drains battery. Im assumeing a short but what would short and cause rev issue and work fine when headlights on? Any help?

Your rectifier has gone bad, causing it to overcharge.never heard of a KQ 285,must be a 300.

zuki I believe is correct. the rectifier is bad anad the over charging was being compensated by the burning headlights. But with the smoke now you may have wire damage so I would pull the plastis and the fuel tank if needed the replace the part and trace down all the wires to and from it for burning.
