2001 300 ltf
Ok, here goes. I bought this 300 kingquad new in 2001 and as of right now it has right at 700 miles on it. From the day I brought it home it would sometimes backfire and make a poof when you turned it off. Sometime when you rode for a while it would die and not crank back for 20 minutes or so. The dealer worked on it until the warranty ran out with no results. My riding partner was killed in an accident so the thing sat for about a year in my garage and when I finally decided to ride again I drained the tank, fresh gas new plug and still the same problem. I've had it in probably 7 different suzuki shops on no one can fix it although they have helped it somewhat. Now when you ride it it runs like I think it should and maybe 15 minutes later it will die just like someone cut the gas off. Its hard to start back and when it does it misses and backfires badly. So far the dealers have changed the oil, airfilter, drained and cleaned the tank and petcock, rebuilt carb 3 times, 2 new coils and mostly given up. I put a clear inline filter in the gas line and when it started missing I jerked the seat off and the filter was full of gas and the fuel pump was working. the plug seems hot and don't look fouled, feels like it has plenty of fire.I'd really like to ride this thing so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know in my owners manual it says you can go from the standard spark plug (NGK DR7EA) to NGK DR8EA if the standard plug tends to run hot. Might wanna try switching from the standard plug to the other and see if it helps a bit. But it sounds more like what my bike is doing from time to time, it starts and runs fine but sometimes it will just sputter and stall out of nowhere. I even had mild to loud backfiring depending on the speed when it stalled out. Though it started right back up after it stalled out 60% of the time but I've had it were it didn't start up at all for about 5 minutes until i applied full choke then it caught. And the one weekend i took it out and i just got it out of the garage and went to close the doors and it stalled out and never started back up. I tried for several days and got nothing and ended up bringing it to the dealership before i went on holidays and he even tried it the next day and nothing. But when he went to actually work on it the following week it started to his surprise. He said he drove it around for a bit and let it idle then drove it around again for 2 hours and no problem. So he wasn't sure what it was but it almost sounds like something was logged in one of my jets or something. And another weird thing is that it now idles much slower then before and the mysterious backfire poof i had when i turned it off after a ride has seemed to disappeared. So it may be a blocked jet or a dirty carb even though you had it worked on 3 times. Cause i know all it takes is one tinny spec on dirt to throw things off.

After three years 9 Suzuki dealers, 3 carb rebuilds, stator, rectifier, coil, cdi box, rewiring, 2 batteries, 9 million plugs, 4 valve adjustments, key switch, kill switch, and a small fortune I fixed the darn thing. Finally just went and bought a new carb after all the dealers swear that ain't the problem. Put it on myself and been running good with no more issues.

Well ain't that a shock. I swear some dealers are in it just to screw you over and take your money.
Mine actually died last fall. I took it out for a day of hunting and the bike seemed to be running somewhat o.k but was idling rough and slow. After a day of hunting i loaded it on the trailer and went for supper in town. After supper i headed out to my buddy's with it and went to help him out around the yard with it but the darn thing refused to idle without holding the throttle, had barely no power, and hesitated a lot while under power.
Fortunately for me, i had a few knowledgeable guys here on the forum that led me in the general direction of my problem. So when i brought it to the dealership i told them what i thought my problem was and they changed just that. Turns out my fuel petcock was my culprit after all. Now my bike runs like a champ.

Yikes..!! That's a wallet breaker right there. Another wallet breaker that's bad are the rear drive axles, in Canada they are $279 per axle. And if you get a dealership to change them for you It'll cost you a nice $700 repair. That one hurt me last year.

Nothing cheap anymore, just picked up a 95 KQ300 low mileage but been sitting for 5 years, picked it up cheap but with new petcock, carb kit, bearings seals, boots, breaks, its became a money pit. When i get it done ill have a gem. Also a quadrunner 250 that was given to me like new but but was run dry of oil.Another money pit but i have alot of fun.

Hey man, that's all that counts. Also, i bet you gain lot's of knowledge working on all these Quadrunners & King Quads. Is also one of the reasons why my bike's fixed thanks to you. I've often wondered if i should invest in a service manual for mine. I'm not very mechanically inclined so i think with a manual i would probably attempt my own repairs. Think you told me once the only special tool i would ever need is a slide hammer.

A good slide hammer works great on pulling axles on about all quads,a flywheel puller is a good tool to have, but about all bikes use a different one.a voltmeter, compression guage, torque wrench, common hand tools, along with filler guages are all necessities in atv repair.manuals are a must untill you lean the shortcuts. Some of the honda atvs have to have a relearn done to the ecm if the simple task of taking the carb off is performed,i still have to use my service mamual for this task.I learned hands on by doing repairs for the local shop when they get overloaded. Its like the automotive industry, new changes all the time.

I learned the art of working or bikes and 4 wheelers by experience. The dealedships around here have either went out of business or charge $65 an hour to do the work. I cant afford that so I get the manual and figure it out. It fun to do and taking pride in doing it myself too.
